Celebrating the Communities We Love: Nonprofits Making a Difference

November 17, 2025

November is a month of gratitude — a time to pause, reflect and give thanks for the people and organizations who make our communities stronger.

At SSC CPAs + Advisors, we’re lucky to work alongside incredible clients, partners and neighbors who are dedicated to creating positive change. From empowering survivors and supporting education to bringing the arts to life and helping Kansas communities stay connected, these organizations inspire us year-round.

As we enter this season of thanks, we’re shining a light on a few nonprofits close to our hearts — and to the communities we call home.

Friends of the Zoo – Topeka

Where community and conservation come together.

Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center has long been a beloved local treasure, but behind the scenes, Friends of the Zoo helps make its mission possible. This nonprofit supports the zoo through fundraising, events and outreach that connect people with animals and inspire a deeper commitment to conservation.

From their annual fundraising events to educational programs for kids and families, Friends of the Zoo helps the Topeka Zoo thrive as both a fun destination and a force for environmental stewardship. If you’re looking for a reason to visit, check out one of their upcoming events or become a member — it’s an easy way to support one of Topeka’s most cherished community assets.

Safehome – Overland Park

Empowering survivors, building safer futures.

In Johnson County, Safehome provides hope and healing for survivors of domestic violence. Their comprehensive services, from safe shelter and legal advocacy to counseling and prevention education, are life-changing for individuals and families seeking safety and stability.

The impact of Safehome extends beyond emergency response. Their team works tirelessly to build awareness, advocate for survivors, and break the cycle of abuse through community education. You can follow their efforts at @safehomeks to learn how to get involved or support their mission during this season of giving.

Every survivor deserves safety, dignity and the chance to thrive — and Safehome is making that possible every single day.

KanREN – Lawrence

Keeping Kansas connected, one institution at a time.

Based in Lawrence, KanREN provides high-speed internet connectivity and expert technology support to schools, libraries, hospitals and other “anchor institutions” across Kansas. Their mission is simple but profound: connect the organizations that keep our communities learning, healing and growing.

KanREN’s work reaches far beyond technology; it’s about ensuring access and equity. In an era when connectivity defines opportunity, their leadership helps rural and urban institutions alike deliver education, healthcare and public service efficiently and securely.

We’re proud to partner with KanREN as they keep Kansas on the leading edge of innovation and collaboration.

Salina Area Chamber of Commerce – Salina

Championing business, community and connection.

As a long-standing advocate for local enterprise, the Salina Chamber of Commerce continues to drive growth and opportunity for businesses of all sizes. From workforce development to community engagement, their work helps make Salina a vibrant place to live and work.

This month, the Chamber hosted the Kansas Young Professionals Summit (November 7, 2025), an energizing event that featured speaker Joel Goldberg and celebrated emerging leaders across the state. It’s just one example of how the Chamber fosters collaboration, innovation and the next generation of Kansas business leadership.

We’re grateful for the Chamber’s commitment to supporting both people and progress across the region.

Topeka Civic Theatre – Topeka

Bringing stories to life, one performance at a time.

Topeka Civic Theatre has been entertaining and inspiring audiences for generations, combining community spirit with a deep love of the performing arts. From classic plays to family favorites, the theatre’s stage is a gathering place for creativity, connection and joy.

Beyond the spotlight, Topeka Civic Theatre offers youth programming, education and outreach that nurture the next generation of artists and audiences alike. Follow @topekacivictheatre to see what’s on stage next — and consider attending a show or supporting their mission to keep live theatre thriving in Topeka.

Gratitude That Grows

Across every SSC location, from Topeka to Overland Park, Salina to Lawrence, we’re proud to be part of communities filled with dedicated people and organizations doing meaningful work.

This month, and every month, we say thank you to the nonprofits who inspire us to think bigger, give back and grow together.

Whether you’re attending a local theatre performance, supporting survivors, helping young professionals connect or visiting the zoo with your family, you’re part of what makes these communities so special.

At SSC, community isn’t just where we work — it’s who we are.
